Custom Throw Pillows
Posted on 03. May, 2009 by DesignDNA in Accessories, Decorating
Most girls I know love throw pillows. If you are like me, you have 6 regular pillows, and then 3-5 decorative throw pillows for the bed or the couch! They can get expensive however, ranging from $10 for a standard pillow to $50 for a more high end fabric/design.
Today Im going to let you in on a secret…..you can make your own custom pillows for under $50…and have many of them!
Things you will need:
- Fabric (cut to your choice of size…standard size is around 16×16)
- Stuffing/batting (You can get this at any craft store)
- Sewing machine/Needles (Works best with a machine, and you can often rent them. Can sew by hand, it will just take a bit longer)
- Thread to match fabric, needles, Good pair of Scissors or Fabric Sheers
Cut 2 pieces of fabric to size, keeping in mind to give an extra inch for room to sew. Lay pieces so that the side of the fabric you want displayed is on the outside.
Tip: If both sides of the fabric are the same, it wont matter how you lay them. Only if the fabric has one side.
Sew 3 sides about half an inch from the edge, leaving the 4th side mostly sewn with about 2-3 inches open for stuffing. Remove your thread and needle and tie a knot. Turn your fabric to the right sides out and begin stuffing. I recommend using a lot, because over time the stuffing can loosen.
Tip: You can also opt for down feathers to mix in with the stuffing so that the pillow is fuller.
Once you have it completely filled to your liking you can close up the hole. Sew as close to the edge as you can and trim excess fabric with fabric sheers so as not to fray the fabric.
Ta da! Instant custom pillow! Keep in mind you can use 2 different fabrics if you like to mix it up-Bold Stripes on one side, flowers on the other, or maybe a faux fur on one, and a fun pattern on the back
Tip: The thicker the fabric, the bigger needle you will need!
The options truly are endless,so have fun with it! I will post some pictures of pillows I have made shortly!
