OK, so I’m from Michigan originally, where most people by age 26 are married, have a kid on the way and own a home. Putting your own unique stamp on something you own is by far easier when you own the place right? Seemingly, yes-but I say NO! Living in L.A. the past 4 years has allowed me to get creative in small spaces and think of way to make the place “my own” without upsetting the landlord!
I realize that particularly in L.A people move almost yearly…it’s insane! I’m one of the “crazies” and have moved 4 times already! However, there’s still tons you can do to make the space fun! Often times I have painted and it helped the landlord lease my unit-so go ahead an paint-worse cause you paint it back…no biggie!
Popcorn Anyone?
Yes, most apartments have popcorn ceilings…totally 80’s and outdated…that we can’t change. However, we can update lighting! You’d be surprised how switching out lighting can really change a room. You can find tips on how to safely swap lighting here http://www.wikihow.com/Install-a-Light-Fixture
Most light fixtures you buy will also have instructions. I know you’re thinking, why do it if I’m going to move? Why not? It’s something you can take with you when you leave! Also, you dn’t have spend a fortune on new lighting, whether it’s track lighting for art on a wall (Gallery effect) or a chandelier over your kitchen table…look at garage sales, the Salvation Army, or on-line for steals. A little bronze paint, or color of your choice, some fun crystal beading from a craft store and you have a fun new Chandelier!
Also when you buy lamps, think outside the box with the shades. You can actually get really creative and paint the inside of lamp shades so that when the light is turned on it’s quite pretty!
Some other concerns when decorating an apartment is usually size…most often the living space is not huge, and seating becomes and issue. My first point of advise is MEASURE! I think often many people buy furniture that’s too large for the space, but it’s comfy. Here’s a few tricks!
You can buy a couple smaller pieces of furniture that are proportionate to the space. Make storage cubes your coffee table/additional seating! This is pretty common and not anything new-just a reminder that you don’t always need the large L shape sofa to provide extra seating. Another way to get more bang for your butts….is rather than chairs around your kitchen table, utilize benches…almost creating a eat-in kitchen. The benches will allow for a few more people at your place to sit comfortably!
